Vinhos - Review

A review of one of the best game in Essen 2010 by Florian Ruckeisen.

I admit I've been a pretty lazy Geek so far, but sometimes a man's gotta do what a man's gotta do. Which in this case means tackle the task of writing my first review, about what turned out to be the game of this year's Spiel for me and my friend I went there with - Vinhos.

This review was written after 3 completed plays (two with 4 players, one with 3). I won't go over all the rules and gameplay in here - Vital himself has already covered that in a much more thorough and awesome way than I would, so I'll only go into mechanics when I feel they need specific mentioning.

Finca - Review

by Gary Lee (樂思遊戲)

Jottings (Power Grid: Russia - Review)

Hi everybody,

I am Samuel and this is my first time to make a write in this blog.

This time, I would like to share my enjoyments with you that we played the latest Power Grid (PG) map (Russia) last weekend. From my memory, this should be our 3rd or 4th time to play this map since we bought it from Essen Game Fair 2010. The game involved totally 6 players – Angela, Susanna, Danny, Jay, Tony and me.

It was started by Danny laying No.5 Power Plant for bidding and all players tried to optimize the resources as usual. After the first round, we found that all players’ networks had initially divided into two groups for competition, i.e. left-hand side & right-hand side. Left-hand side consisted of Pink, Green & Purple regions (Brown region not in play) being developed by Angela’s, Susanna’s, Jay’s & Tony’s networks whereas right-hand side only consisted of Yellow & Red regions which been occupied by Danny’s and my networks.
A lot of big plants came out early so that development on map was a bit slower than usual. After 4-5 rounds, nearly everybody had already gotten a big plant and built 4-5 cities. Soon afterwards, without a usual wait before step 2, Angela built up to 8 cities from 5 cities. Some smaller plants started showing up, but this didn't really affect players getting new plant. The game paced so rapid and we did not wait long for step 3. Probably, due to rule change that smallest plant is removed when one passes in power plant auction phase. We only spent 1 round in step 3 to decide the winner.
The game had stepped into the last round and most of us were ready to build their 14th / 15th cities in order to win the game. Upon the building phase of the last round, the position of Susanna was earlier than mine. When Susanna tried to place her houses on board for her to meet the goal for victory - 14 cities, Mr. Tony gave her a tip if she places her houses alongside anther route should be saved 2 coins. Its outcome had dramatically blocked my shortest and cheapest way to collect my last house at the cities either YEKATERINBURG or CHELYABINSK which should let me saved for up to $4.

Consequently, Angela maintains her glory and high-standard to win this map by building/supplying 15 houses whereas Tony, Susanna, Danny & me all 4 players had 14 houses so that tie breaker was decided by our money left (Tony left $18, Susanna & Danny $2 each but I have no money left). Jay could only build his 13th houses at red region and made himself become the last leader.

Reviewed from this game, if Susanna had not followed Tony’s tip or she had not observed clearly, I might have a good chance to commit my plan; then, my final position would be 3rd but not 5th since I would have $4 left and Susanna would become no money left and Danny still had $2 left. At last, I would like to pinpoint that playing PG and its expansions draws us a lot of fun and I thought that we can still explore much for each new play.
